2013-14 Convocations

Jessica Matthews / Julia Silverman

Wednesday, October 2, 7p.m. Jones Auditorium

Two undergrad women at Harvard got a great idea in a course they were failing. They took a chance & created something entirely new: a soccer ball that could generate power to read by. Thirty minutes of play gets 3 hours of reading time. It was a solution that could encourage reading in developing parts of the world.  They weren’t physics majors or engineers. They were social science majors. Fast forward: at age 26, Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman have started a company that does good business by doing good. Uncharted Play.

Faculty Distinguished Lecture

March 19, 7p.m. Jones Auditorium

Christ in Chains

Join our own historian Dan Fountain as he takes us on a journey into our past.  Fountain follows the testimony of slaves and others to find the answer to a very interesting question:  When did Christianity really take hold in African American communities?  Most historians say that happened before and during the Civil War years, when the message of Afro-Christianity encouraged perseverance and hope for deliverance.  But is that what the historical records actually say?  Follow a history detective in action as he works his way to uncover the power of freedom.

Join us at the Faculty Distinguished Lecture as we celebrate excellence in scholarship and research.
