Ida Poteat was a professor of art at Meredith from its opening in 1899 to 1939. Her influence extended to many areas of the College in the early years, from designing the College Seal, creating the original Alice in Wonderland costumes, to the generations of young women who were her students.
NCpedia has a detailed biography of Miss Poteat.
In 2010 an exhibition about Miss Poteat's life and work was presented in conjunction with an Alumnae art exhibition. An exhibition catalogue titled Miss Ida's Legacy was published in conjunction with the event.
