Success Center: Faculty Advising

Strengths-Based Approach

A pair of Meredith students review and share their strengths during StartStrong

Faculty advisors work with students to identify their strengths and skills. By helping students understand who they are and where their strengths lie, faculty advisors can help students to develop a clearer idea of their academic and professional goals. The CliftonStrengths® assessment and StrongPoints® program can help students identify, explore, and develop their strengths as they develop academic and career plans.

Faculty Advising Development

The SSC is here to support faculty advisors as they assist students with academic planning, career exploration, and registration. Faculty advisors support student success by providing information about academic procedures and policies, assisting with academic and career exploration, and helping advisees set and pursue their educational goals.

During the academic year, the SSC offers development sessions for faculty advisors to discuss advising practices and procedures. For policies and practices specifically related to Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (CRC), please see the CRC Cross-Registration Instructions and the CRC Off-Campus Credit Application. If one of your advisees needs to take a Leave of Absence or withdraw, see Processes for Students who Need to Step Away

For additional information about faculty advising development, please contact the Student Success Center by emailing success@meredith.edu.

What is Faculty Advising?

Meredith-Specific Knowledge for Faculty Advisors

The words Frequently Asked Questions are written in white on a gray background.

At Meredith, faculty advisors help students identify their interests, set educational goals, and develop a plan to reach their goals. They help students plan and schedule classes through Self-Service and provide support during the registration process. Faculty advisors also provide students with information about programs, resources, policies and procedures as they plan and register for classes.
When logged into Self-Service, you should see a column of icons on the left hand side of the webpage. You will need to click on the Miscellaneous icon, represented by "MC," and scroll down to "Registration Approval." After clicking on "Registration Approval," you can now select the term you wish to clear a student for registration. After clicking the appropriate term, your list of advisees will automatically populate. Find the student you wish to clear and click on the box to the left of their name under the "Approved" column. You will know if a student is cleared to register if you see "Yes" to the left of their name.
Students will register for classes via Self-Service. The student side of Self-Service looks different than the advisor side as they will utilize the "Student Planning" tab found in their home page. Once clicking on the "Student Planning" tab, they will see "View Your Progress" and "Plan Your Degree & Register for Classes." Students can add classes to their plan in the "View Your Progress" tab but will actually enroll in courses in "Plan your Degree & Register for Classes." Here is a very helpful video on how to register for classes: Self-Service for Student Planning
General Education enhances a Meredith degree through coursework and experiences that position students to live, work and lead in a complex world. At Meredith, our dynamic General Education program gives every student a firm foundation in the liberal arts and sciences, world citizenship and academic research. Below are some helpful resources for both students and faculty advisors:

Core Connections Tracker

  • The Core Connections Tracker can be used to note what General Education requirements have been met and if any courses will also fulfill major requirements.

Courses that Fulfill General Education Requirements

  • This document is an in-depth list of what specific courses can fulfill General Education requirements.

A student's progress screen is arguably the most useful and important page in Self-Service. In the progress screen, you can view how many credits a student has completed, planned and is enrolled in. The middle bar will show advisors and students how all of these credit types (completed, in progress, and planned) add up in comparison to the 124 credit Meredith graduation requirement. Completed/awarded credits are represented by dark green, in progress credits are represented by light green, and planned credits are represented by yellow.

It is also important to use the General Education, Major, and minor requirements listed in the student's progress page. Just like the progress bar, the different General Education requirements will be color coded depending if the student has completed a course (green), in progress (yellow), or not completed (red).

Advisors work with advisees to facilitate the process of career option research, evaluation, planning, and decision-making. When working with undeclared advisees, this process involves exploring and deciding on a major. For helpful conversation starters and discussion points, please consult this document: Conversation Guide about Choosing a Major
Answer to the above question
The Add/Drop date is the last day a student can drop a class from their schedule without a grade and add courses to their schedule without special approval. The Add/Drop date for Fall and Spring is usually around one week after the first day of class (refer to the Academic Calendar). We encourage students to reach out to their faculty advisors before making changes to their schedule.
