MBA Resources: Library Research Guide

Introduction

Welcome to this introduction to the Meredith College Library's key business resources!

Use this guide as a springboard for doing business research, in this class and throughout your time in Meredith's MBA program.  For a more comprehensive look at our business resources broken down by subject area, visit our Business Subject Guide.

Industry Research

Use these library databases to research current and projected conditions in individual industries.  Reports are available for the US, but also specific states, other countries, and global sectors.

Company SWOT Analyses

Use these reports to gain insight into the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats for individual publicly-traded companies.

Annual Reports

To get a company's perspective on its own performance and outlook, visit its website and look for the corporate information or investor's webpage, where its Annual Reports are published.

Look through the company's most recent 2-3 reports for information about its latest activities and achievements, as well as risks and challenges confronting it in the near future.

Articles from Magazines and Trade Publications

Use these library databases to find articles from major business magazines and newspapers, trade publications (periodicals for specific industries), and scholarly journals.

Article Search Tips

When searching Business Source Premier for articles, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Use AND and OR to connect keywords: e.g., Nike AND (security OR privacy OR cybersecurity)
  2. In your search results, limit to the last five years
  3. In your search results, limit the Source Type to Magazines or Trade Publications (which are industry-specific magazines)
  4. When viewing an article, click Cite to create a properly styled citation, or Permalink for a persistent URL back to the article
  5. If the full text isn't available, click Check for Full Text, and if necessary, request the article from another library

Financial Data

For any publicly traded company, use Morningstar to find ten years of financial data and key ratios, plus an expert analyst's perspective on the company's performance and outlook.
