Dr. Michelle Ann Laws was in on June 2, 1968 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where at a very young age she advocated for safer playground equipment in Chapel Hill’s Public Housing. Her activism in her adults years was sparked by her work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in which she fought for the housekeepers pay and organized a group of students to attend Keith Edwards court date to sue the university for discrimination, in solidarity. With role models such as Eva Clayton, Senator Jamie Lucas, and Andrea Harris, Dr. Laws works as the Assistant Director of North Carolina Division of Mental Health and is currently advocating for mental health services in rural areas as well as health equity. --Compiled by Delaney Rhodes
