Borrowing policies for Faculty/Staff

Checkout policies

Most library materials loaned to faculty and staff are due in the first week of August. Materials borrowed between July 1 and the first week of August are due in August of the following year. After 21 days, materials may be recalled at the request of another library patron. Items may be renewed up to two times. Faculty and staff who find they need library materials for more than two years are strongly encouraged to consider acquiring a copy for their personal collection and releasing the library copy to the Meredith community.  DVDs can be checked out for 21 days.  A valid Meredith ID must be presented to check out materials, including reserve items.

Reference books and periodicals circulate only at the discretion of library staff.

CRC privileges

Meredith faculty and staff also have borrowing privileges at the other Cooperating Raleigh College libraries. To borrow items from NC State, you no longer need a CRC library card.  Simply visit the NCSU library, get the book(s) off the shelf, and show your Meredith faculty ID at their circulation desk.  They will create a guest borrowing account for you, which will be valid until the end of the academic year.  To inquire about borrowing items at other CRC libraries, call or email our library's Ask Desk, and the librarian can find out the procedure that you should follow.

Citation Management Tools

The library's Research and Instruction department provides support and instruction for Zotero and Mendeley.

Zotero is a free web-based citation management tool.  By installing the Zotero program plus a Zotero Connector on their preferred Internet browser, users can save citation information for library resources and free websites to their Zotero library with a single click.  Zotero will also help users create bibliographies or insert proper citations into their Microsoft Word documents or Google Docs.  For help with using Zotero, see the library's Zotero 101 guide.

Mendeley is a citation manager that integrates nicely with our Scopus database, so it's a great choice for science majors.  It consists of a web importer that installs on your Internet browser, an online library for storing citations, and a cite tool that enables you to integrate your citations into Microsoft Word documents.  For help with using Mendeley, see the library's Mendeley guide.

Contact your program's liaison librarian if you would like to have them demonstrate one of these citation tools to your class.

Consultation with a librarian

Librarians at CCL are available as consultants when planning research assignments. Since they are familiar with the range of sources we have access to in print and online, librarians can help you design a research project to ensure students will be able successfully locate needed materials at CCL. If consulted far enough in advance, we may also be able to add items to our collection to support a research assignment.

Course Reserves

To put items on reserve in the library for a course, please complete the Course Reserves form.  
Faculty with hybrid or fully online courses, please contact your departmental liaison to discuss copyright friendly alternatives to traditional print reserves.

As an alternative to putting a video on reserve, you may prefer to make the video available through the Library Digital Media Room. The LDMR allows all the students in your class to view a video individually from the comfort of their room or apartment.

Library Instruction

The library takes a systematic approach to teaching information literacy and library skills, so that all students learn the basics of how to conduct academic research. While the goal is to embed most research instruction within two required English classes (ENG 111 and ENG 200) and one required discipline-specific class (the one designated as the Information Literacy thread course in each major), there may be other classes that would benefit from additional instruction or consultation.

CCL librarians are available to lead research instruction sessions for your students in the library's Freeman Room or in your classroom. These could focus on topics such as developing advanced search strategies or locating specific types of materials or information.

Interlibrary Loan

The Library will borrow physical items (such as books) and get copies of journal articles for you from other libraries if they are not available from CCL.  There is no cost for this service. Please see the ILL page to make requests.  Watch our how-to video to learn about the three ways to place ILL requests.

Liaison Librarian Program

Every academic program on campus has a designated liaison librarian who supports that program's research and instruction needs.  Liaison librarians can be a point of contact for faculty on any library-related question or request.

Linking from Brightspace

It is relatively straightforward to link your students to library content (such as eBooks, journal articles, and streaming videos) from your Brightspace course pages.  But you need to use "persistent links" to ensure that your students can access the content any time, from on or off campus.

Purchase Request

Use the Purchase Request form to suggest that the library purchase an item for the library collection.

Please check the library catalog before requesting to confirm the item is not available from the library.

Scantron

A Scantron test scoring machine, scoring forms, and item analysis forms are located in the library receiving area next to the Library Dean's office.
