Our librarians have curated a collection of periodicals that is specifically designed to be useful for browsing purposes as well as possible course assignments.  It can be found on the library's Ground Floor, in the first two rows of shelving near the Learning Center.

This collection houses a wide range of periodicals, from early 20th century magazines to art/design periodicals and recent issues of scholarly journals.  All were selected for this collection because of their relevance to Meredith's curriculum, or their potential use as primary source material about the culture and history of the 20th century.

Many of these periodicals are also available electronically for selected years through our library's online resources.  Please search a periodical's title in our Journal Finder to see the full range of our print and online holdings.  In many cases, the print holdings pre-date our online holdings, which was an important factor in our decision to retain them.

Please use the flatbed scanner or photocopier in the library's Creation Station room if you wish to scan or copy an article or image from one of these magazines.  They cannot be checked out from the library, except by special request from faculty.

Assignment Suggestions

Here are some possible assignments that could be built around this collection.  One advantage of requiring students to use physical magazines is that it would be more resistant to AI!

  1. Compare the content and language of two articles on the same topic published 20+ years apart
  2. Collect advertisements from several decades for a product to compare messaging, gender roles, etc.
  3. Browse a news/cultural magazine from the year when a novel or story was set, to gain cultural/historical context
  4. Find a photograph or illustration to use as inspiration for a creative writing exercise
  5. Read opinion or news articles from the time of a major event or world development, to understand contemporaneous perspectives
  6. Compare coverage of an event in a mainstream news magazine and a more specialized/targeted magazine
  7. Find coverage of a scholarly study in a magazine and then find the original study online to see how it was represented
  8. Use one or more images from an art or interior design magazine as inspiration for the student's own creation
  9. Analyze the communication style, biases, or dated assumptions of articles from early 20th century magazines
  10. Examine Meredith's history in light of articles from magazines about women's education (AAUW) or Baptist education
