Foster took an was active role on campus in student government. In her interview, Foster explains that in the 1990s, Limestone University was central to her personal and political growth by being a women’s college. When Limestone began to accept male students, she noticed there was a lower population of African Americans there and decided to join the black student body and study the social problems faced by black people in her community. Foster uses her experience and career to encourage African American women to seek positions as mental health counselors and represent the unique challenges to mental health among the African American community. She explains the need for more African American women in the counseling field because people feel more comfortable with some who looks like them and understands their culture. --Compiled by Demetria Foster
