Valerie Ann Foster Gurley is a native of the greater Charlotte Metropolitan area, born in Shelby, North Carolina, and currently residing in Gaffney, South Carolina. Gurley’s experience in public service is closely tied to her career as a licensed professional counselor and certified addiction counselor. Throughout her career she has worked to increase the presence and success of African American women in public service professions. Gurley uses her professional platform as window into the challenges women of color face in the workforce and in public service, as well as a platform to improve women’s working conditions, health, and professional successes. --Compiled by Demetria Foster
