Mendeley 101: Add References

Adding References Manually and in Scopus

How to Add References

Manually:

You can manually add references to Mendeley by choosing “Add references” in the Reference manager, selecting “Add reference manually,” and filling in the information necessary to create a complete citation in your preferred style. This method is useful for unusual sources like interviews and documents that are unavailable on the Web

In Scopus:

When in a Scopus record for a particular article, look for the “Export” option about halfway down the page on the right by “Full text options.” When you click on “Export” a menu bar will appear and on that menu you’ll want to select “Mendeley.” A little pop-up will appear in the bottom right corner of the page letting you know once the citation has been saved to your reference library.

Adding References Using the Web Importer

How to add References

With Web Importer:

The simplest way to gather references using Mendeley is by using the Mendeley Web Importer browser add-on. Once this Web Importer is installed, you can click the Mendeley icon on any webpage, and a popup window will appear that will allow you to select references from that page, and add them to your library.

If an item’s full text is not in the database but you obtain it later (by scanning the item or getting the PDF from Interlibrary loan or another website), you can add it to the item’s citation in Mendeley. Click on the citation and once you’re on the “Info” tab, scroll down to files, click on the plus sign, browse to the item’s PDF and click “Open” to attach it to the Mendeley citation.
