Understand our history:
To understand the college's history, a diverse team from the Department of History, Humanities, the Library and College Archives have collaborated on several projects. To date, research and projects have included the following:
The U.S.S. Research Team has conducted extensive research on the person for whom campus buildings were named. Reports were submitted to the Executive Leadership Team and the Board of Trustees.
The USS Research Team, has also shared their research at several Universities Studying Slavery Conferences.
Research:
Dr. Daniel Fountain, Professor of History, conducted research on Meredith's founder, Thomas Meredith and the early leaders of the college. His research resulted in an article entitled The Role of Baptist and Meredith College Leadership in White Supremacist Advocacy and Policy in Early Twentieth-Century North Carolina. This article was published in the January 2022 issue of The Journal of Southern History.
Dr. Sarah Roth, Dean of the school of Arts and Humanities, conducted research on James Yadkin Joyner, a former Meredith trustee and State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Dr. Angela Robbins, Associate Professor of History, conducted research on Dr. Elizabeth Delia Dixon-Carroll. Her research resulted in an article titled: "White supremacy in North Carolina rests in woman's hands": Dr. Delia Dixon-Carroll and the Power of White Women Voters and was published in the Spring 2024 issue of Southern Cultures.
All research was presented to the student body, the Executive Leadership Team and the Board of Trustees.
Archives Audit:
Janice Sniker, library Archives and Collections Management Associate, conducted an audit of the Acorn, the student literary magazine.
Carrie Nichols, Head of Technical Services, conducted an audit of the Oak Leaves, the student Yearbook.
All findings of offensive material were noted and shared with the Dean of the Library and the Executive Leadership Team.
