Dr. Christie Neill McLeod was born April 27, 1935 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her father worked as a banker and her mother as a church organist and choir director. She attended Broughton High School, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in sociology, and North Carolina State University. She eventually earned a Doctorate of Education. At the beginning of her career, McLeod worked for the Girl Scouts in various leadership positions in both New York City and North Carolina. After going to graduate school, she began working for North Carolina’s community college system and served in several leadership positions, including Dean of Continuing Education and Vice President of Instruction and Student Development at Roxboro Piedmont Technical Community College, President of Martin Community College, and Vice President of Continuing Education at Wake Technical Community College. She became involved in the ERA movement while in graduate school when a friend asked her to attend a Women’s Forum meeting in Durham. As a Women’s Forum member and activist for the ERA, McLeod would visit groups like Business and Professional Women (BPW) and local book clubs to spread the word about the amendment. She became known locally for her activism and was invited to write in the local newspaper in support of the ERA. At the time of the interview, McLeod had retired from the community college system and remained an active member of the Women’s Forum.
