Maureen A. Hartford (1999-2011)

Maureen Hartford was the seventh president of Meredith College - and had the distinction of being the first woman to take on the task. 

During her tenure, Hartford led efforts to strengthen academic offerings with the establishment of the Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Science in Nutrition and the engineering dual degree program with NCSU. In addition, Hartford promoted study abroad programs, increasing participation from 7% to 31%, in part by opening a permanent home in Sansepolcro, Italy.

Dr. Hartford oversaw "The Campaign for Meredith," increasing the school's endowment by more than $35 million,

In  addition, Dr. Hartford worked to increase the diversity of the student body and to expand and enhance campus facilities. 

Dr. Harford earned a Bachelor of Arts in French and a Master of Arts in College Teaching, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned her doctorate from the University of Arkansas in Highter College Administration. Before coming to Meredith College, she had worked for 30 years in higher education, including most recently as the Vice-President for Student Affairs at the University of Michigan.
