Shelly Mercedes Winters was born October 29, 1975 in Raleigh, North Carolina to Sandra and Joseph Winters Jr. Working as a strategist, Ms. Winters aims to preserve the history of Freedmen’s Villages throughout the city. She is currently advocating for education as she believes that true citizen engagement can only happen with proper education. She believes that it is important for people to know what is going on around them as she mimics the words of the President of Raliegh Citizens Advisory Council. “it shouldn’t have to happen to you for you to go.” --Compiled by Delaney Rhodes
