Photos through the Decades at Meredith College: 1960s

In the Meredith College archives are literally hundreds of photos. With them, we can see both what students over the decades have in common, and how things have changed.

1960s

Living in the Home Management House for a month required rotating responsibilities as Manager/Hostess, Housekeeper, Cook and Assistant Cook. (early 1960s.)

For many years,  a one-day school holiday was part of the official calendar, so students could attend the fair.

On the Timeline....

1962   The new infirmary becomes the first air-conditioned building on campus.

1963    Water tower removed (February)  when the city began supplying water to the college.

1963    Required Sunday attendance at church ends.

1964    Completion of Elva Bryan McIver Amphitheater. (First used on Class Day, 1964.)

1966    Barn/stables with riding ring built off Wade Ave. 

1967    Meredith College and NCSU begin a program of class and library exchange privileges.

1968    Coffeehouse opens during Religious Emphasis Week.

1968    Private phones installed in dorm rooms.

1968    Saturday classes end.

1968    Bermuda shorts permitted during exam week (except in Johnson Hall.) 

1968    Bathtub Ring founded by Class of 1970.

1969    Chain link fence added around campus.

1969    Restriction on partnered social dancing (with men) on campus removed from Student Handbook.
