BAREFOOT RESIDENCE HALL

Barefoot Hall is located on the east side of campus, near the Faircloth Gate entrance. Upon its opening in 1972, Barefoot was initially a residence hall for freshmen. By 2011, it primarily housed seniors. With the addition on campus of the Oaks Apartments for upperclassmen, Barefoot Residence Hall was closed and students moved to the other 6 residence halls.

History

Barefoot Residence Hall was dedicated on February 25, 1972 on Founders’ Day and  opened to residents that same month. Built to house 150 freshmen, it was the luxury of air-conditioning that caught the attention of the student newspaper, THE TWIG.

This newest residence hall was named in honor of Board of Trustees member Culbreth Barefoot and his wife Kilty Barefoot. The Barefoots were recognized for their substantial “challenge gift” donation to the Meredith College Advancement Program (MCAP), the five year, $5 million campaign initiated in 1968 and dedicated to campus improvements.

In the Fall of 2011, with the opening of the Oaks Apartments, and seeing no need for a seventh dormitory, the administration decided to close Barefoot.

For a time, Technical Services used the first floor as temporary offices while the Noel House was renovated. Barefoot remains closed at this time.
