LEDFORD HALL

Ledford Hall opened in 1993 to serve as a home for the Education, Sociology, Social Work, and Psychology Departments. It still houses these programs and since had expanded to include the Meredith Autism Program. The building has 8 classrooms, 25 offices, a lecture hall, and a computer lab.

History

The Meredith College Board of Trustees approved the construction of multiple building in 1989 and in July 1992, saw the ground breaking of Ledford Hall. Construction finished in late 1993 and opened for classes in the Spring semester of 1994. Ledford Hall is named after Hubert F. Ledford, a former chairmen for the Meredith College Board of Trustees, after he gifted the funding for the new building. Ledford Hall was built to house the Education, Sociology, Social Work, and Psychology departments. In 1995, the triangle are parents verbalized a need to have a behavior based training for children with autism. This lead to the creation of the Meredith Autism Program or MAP.

Ledford Hall was anticipated to be the first of three academic buildings inside the new, mile-long loop road that encompassed the campus.

At the time that Ledford Hall was being built, the psychology and education departments had had the most rapid growth in the Meredith College curriculum for the last 10-12 years.

Ledford Hall was designed by FCW Architects (Raleigh) and built by Peden General Contractors. The building was designed to reflect traditional design elements incorporated on other parts of the grounds.

A trustee and former Chairman of the Board, Mr. Ledford was retired from the Board of Directors of the Durham Life Insurance Company.

At the building's dedication on February 25, 1994,  Mr. Ledford said, "My wife and I feel that Meredith is a great school and my wife and we wanted to have a part in its future." It was said of Mr. Ledford in the program for the event, "This designation ...is in recognition of his loyal friendship to the College, his commitment to academic excellence , and his leader in the business community."
