Heilman Residence Hall is located between the Wainwright Music Building and Barefoot Residence Hall. This dorm was built in 1968 and named for Meredith College President Bruce Heilman. Today Heilman is a freshman residence hall with priority given to students in the Honors and Teaching Fellows programs and student athletes.
Heilman Residence Hall was named for Meredith College’s fifth president, E. Bruce Heilman. While president from 1966-1971, Heilman initiated a great deal of positive change on campus and was beloved by students. Construction on the new dormitory began in 1968 and the dedication ceremony took place in 1969.
The new senior’s dorm was furnished with snack machines on the first floor, kitchenettes on each floor and a bathroom in each room. In addition, it was the first fully -air-conditioned dormitory on campus – thereby earning the nickname, the “Heilman Hilton.”
Today Heilman is home to student athletes and to freshmen in the Honors and Teaching Fellows programs.
Clancy and Theys Construction Company of Raleigh built Heilman Residence Hall.
Heilman was the first completely air-conditioned dormitory on Meredith's campus. This plus the snack machines on the first floor, kitchenettes on each floor and bathrooms in each room lead to the dorm's nickname, the "Heilman Hilton."
Among other luxuries, Heilman's residents appreciated the bathroom in each room.
Heilman Residence Hall has been the site of fires in 1993, 1996, 2000 and 2001. After the 2001 event, which was caused by an unextinguished cigarette in laundry room trash can, smoking was banned in all dorms by all students.
